Up to the knees in the water, a scythe or a fork in hand - this is what cleaning ditches and other watercourses still looks like at the end of the 1950s. Anton Berkenheger, farmer and head of the Meersbach Water and Soil Association in the Haren/Ems region, set himself the goal of making this work easier and more effective. A machine is needed.
In 1963, Anton Berkenheger was granted a patent for his first invention: a tricycle mower for ditch banks. He thus lays the foundation for today's fully hydraulic ditch mowing and clearing equipment.
In 1964, the farmer Anton Berkenheger, the civil engineering contractor Gerhard Knoll and the economist Josef Göcking found Anton Berkenheger & Co. KG in Haren-Erika and hire 4 employees.
As early as 1968, the young, successful company needs more space and moves into a production hall at Haren harbour.
In 1977, a new building is constructed in Haren-Emmeln. First 1,500 square metres for production, warehouse and office. Only seven years later, another 1,500 square metres. The product range is also constantly expanded. Self-propelled embankment mowers, attachments for tractors, mowing boats, all-terrain forklifts and cylinder mowers are sold throughout Germany.
In the mid-1980s, the name Berkenheger stood for innovative complete solutions for watercourse maintenance.
Since the early 1990s, "BERKY" brand machines have also been in demand abroad.
With the new amphibious boats, the BERKY company is expanding its portfolio by a highly relevant division. Now water maintenance from the water is no longer a problem. Whether water weed or blue-green algae, water bodies, whether rivers, lakes or ponds, can now be treated efficiently and optimally in just a few steps. Later, mower collection boats and dregde boats will follow.
In July 2015, it will be possible to rent machines from the BERKY family through the subsidiary Rent-a-berky.
At the end of 2015, BERKY GmbH and Senwatec agreed to move into the future together. Since then, Senwatec has been considered a sister company of BERKY. Through the joint integration under one roof, the individual companies of BERKY GmbH can now offer solutions for the entire water maintenance sector, which represents an absolute added value for the customers.
BERKY took over the company Gilbers Mähtechnik from Geeste in mid-2019. Gilbers specialises in the manufacture of attachments for mowing, mulching and chopping. Mounted on tractors and other vehicles, they are used in water and road maintenance. The takeover strengthens BERKY's attachments division and equips the company for the future!
Since 2022, BERKY has also been more involved in environmental protection. This means that our mower collection boats can be used to collect flotsam and rubbish. The "rubbish collection boat" is born. This is demonstrated, among other things, by the use of our boats by the organisations "Everwave" and "The Ocean cleanup".
Today BERKY GmbH has 85 employees and is proud to be one of the world's leading manufacturers of machines and equipment for watercourse maintenance.
To mark its 60th anniversary, BERKY is setting a new milestone and presenting the new innovative NEREUS range for pioneering water maintenance for the first time.
